COVID-19: How We're Responding Now

How We're Responding Now

As we face the COVID-19 pandemic, we know the mental health crisis that existed before is now even more urgent. Community health systems are strained. Work has rapidly changed. Many Americans are now without jobs. Schooling looks vastly different.

The APA Foundation's work is more important than ever, as we help community leaders navigate these changes and support the mental health of frontline workers

It may be years before the mental health toll of COVID-19 is fully understood, but its effect on front-line healthcare workers is painting a solemn picture today.

A recent study published in JAMA found that among more than a thousand healthcare workers working with COVID-19 patients in China…

  • 50.4% reported symptoms of depression;
  • 44.6% symptoms of anxiety;
  • 34% insomnia; and
  • 71.5% reported distress.

Nurses and other frontline workers were among those with the most severe symptoms.
