APA Foundation Adopts A DC School
When APA moved headquarters from Virginia back into D.C., the Foundation made it a point to seek out a way to give back to the community.
With a middle school right across the street, we looked into how we at the APA could support their efforts for student success. They are part of the DC Public Schools Adopt-a-School program and after a phone call with the Director of the program, the APA Foundation Administration unanimously decided to pursue this opportunity to be part of the community and help the children!
The Adopt-a-School Program is a DCPS initiative launched in 2015 by the School Partnerships Division (SPD) in the Office of Family and Public Engagement. This program provides a structured pathway for partnership between DCPS schools and our community of supporters. This program is intended for corporate and community organizations interested in building relationships with schools that support student success for a minimum of one academic year. During this collaboration, partners and schools will work together to determine how to best connect partner resources and interests with the school’s unique needs. This relationship is a joint effort led by the school and partner, and supported by the SPD.
Through an in-person survey, more than 35% of the entire APA Foundation and APA Administration employees were interested in volunteering their time to give back to the community. We applied and were accepted to the DC Adopt-a-School Program and our adopted school this year is Takoma EC.
Takoma EC is a PK3-8 elementary and middle school that has a school community that fosters the development of confident, happy, healthy, and successful children who leave Takoma prepared with strong academic and social skills to excel in high school and beyond. Their arts-integrated philosophy of teaching and learning builds on our students’ strengths to develop their talents.
We are planning out the volunteer activities and donation efforts that we will accomplish during this first year - come back here for updates!
